MAC Week 3 Reading: Chapters 4-8

Once again I find myself keying in on choice sections of The Art of Possibility, and the latest Zander video. I've included some quotes from the text as well a two lyrical versions of Ode to Joy, and a Youtube clip of the audio. Zander references this Beethoven 9th Symphony excerpt in the video but doesn't really say where its from. Although most of you probably recognize it, I thought it appropriate to include it here.

This is another quote from another Auschwitz survivor. Read it and listen to some Beethoven.

Henry Van Dyke wrote a poem (in English) for the melody of the choral section in the 9th Symphony. Here are his words.

Joyful, joyful, we adore Thee, God of glory, Lord of love;
Hearts unfold like flowers before Thee, opening to the sun above.
Melt the clouds of sin and sadness; drive the dark of doubt away;
Giver of immortal gladness, fill us with the light of day!

All Thy works with joy surround Thee, earth and heaven reflect Thy rays,
Stars and angels sing around Thee, center of unbroken praise.
Field and forest, vale and mountain, flowery meadow, flashing sea,
Singing (sometimes chanting) bird and flowing fountain call us to rejoice in Thee.

Thou art giving and forgiving, ever blessing, ever blessed,
Wellspring of the joy of living, ocean depth of happy rest!
Thou our Father, Christ our Brother, all who live in love are Thine;
Teach us how to love each other, lift us to the joy divine.

Mortals, join the happy chorus, which the morning stars began;
Father love is reigning o'er us, brother love binds man to man.
Ever singing, march we onward, victors in the midst of strife,
Joyful music leads us Sunward in the triumph song of life.

ODE TO JOY (Friedrich Schiller)

BARITONE, QUARTET, AND CHORUS
Joy, beautiful spark of the gods,
Daughter of Elysium,
We enter fire imbibed,
Heavenly, thy sanctuary.

Thy magic reunites those
Whom stern custom has parted;
All men will become brothers
Under thy gentle wing.

May he who has had the fortune
To gain a true friend
And he who has won a noble wife
Join in our jubilation!

Yes, even if he calls but one soul
His own in all the world.
But he who has failed in this
Must steal away alone and in tears.

All the world's creatures
Draw joy from nature's breast;
Both the good and the evil
Follow her rose-strewn path.

She gave us kisses and wine
And a friend loyal unto death;
She gave lust for life to the lowliest,
And the Cherub stands before God.

TENOR SOLO AND CHORUS
Joyously, as his suns speed
Through Heaven's glorious order,
Hasten, Brothers, on your way,
Exulting as a knight in victory.

CHORUS

Joy, beautiful spark of the gods,
Daughter of Elysium,
We enter fire imbibed,
Heavenly, thy sanctuary.

Be embraced, Millions!
This kiss for all the world!
Brothers!, above the starry canopy
A loving father must dwell.

Can you sense the Creator, world?
Seek him above the starry canopy.
Above the stars He must dwell.

Be embraced, Millions!
This kiss for all the world!
Brothers!, above the starry canopy
A loving father must dwell.

Can you sense the Creator, world?
Seek him above the starry canopy.
Above the stars He must dwell.

Joy, beautiful spark of the gods,
Daughter of Elysium,
We enter fire imbibed,
Heavenly, thy sanctuary.

Be embraced, Millions!
This kiss for all the world!
Brothers!, above the starry canopy
A loving father must dwell.

Can you sense the Creator, world?
Seek him above the starry canopy.
Above the stars He must dwell.

Be embraced, Millions!
This kiss for all the world!
Brothers!, above the starry canopy
A loving father must dwell.

Can you sense the Creator, world?
Seek him above the starry canopy.
Above the stars He must dwell.

Joy, daughter of Elysium
Thy magic reunites those
Whom stern custom has parted;
All men will become brothers
Under thy gentle wing.

Be embraced, Millions!
This kiss for all the world!
Brothers!, above the starry canopy
A loving father must dwell.

Joy, beautiful spark of Gods!,
Daughter of Elysium,
Joy, beatiful spark of Gods!.

Leadership from every chair.

Rule Number 6 has got to be my favorite simple bit of wisdom out of chapters 5-8.

We all are standing in radiating possibility, and in every conversation we should see a possibility.

This particular story I found particularly entertaining and inspiring all at the same time.

The Art of Possibility is turning out to be a smash hit with me. Kate supplied this Zander video to me yesterday, if she posts it in her blog this time she gets all the credit for finding it, but I wanted to include it here if not.

  1. @ Adam,
    You pulled all my favorites components of The Art Of Possibilities together all in one spot. Where did you find the quotes. I tried pulling them from our reading with he cut and paste yet Adobe reader does not allow. I did not even think to Screen shot the quotes. You complied a marvelous array of the Art of Possibilities. My hats off to you how you presented the material. Great job as always!! I think we all pretty much stated what Chapters of the reading left the biggest impression on us when we were in Wimba on Wednesday. Thanks once again for sharing those 2 youtube videos with us.

    derek

  2. @Adam
    Again you continue to amaze. I love these lines in the Schiller version:

    Can you sense the Creator, world?
    Seek him above the starry canopy.
    Above the stars He must dwell.

    Living in the moment requires us to understand that something bigger than ourselves is at work in the universe. What better way to understand the way things are. One of my favorite hymns of all time is "It Is Well With My Soul." Horatio G. Spafford wrote the song in 1873 after the death of his only son and a family tragedy that took the rest of his children, four girls, in an ocean liner accident. Because he was scheduled to follow his family over, he embarked on the journey to England, where his wife was waiting, to bury his lost daughters. He wrote this song on the trip across the pond.

    When peace, like a river, attendeth my way,
    When sorrows like sea billows roll;
    Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say,
    It is well, it is well, with my soul.

    Refrain:
    It is well, with my soul,
    It is well, it is well, with my soul.

    Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come,
    Let this blest assurance control,
    That Christ has regarded my helpless estate,
    And hath shed His own blood for my soul.

    My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought!
    My sin, not in part but the whole,
    Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more,
    Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!

    For me, be it Christ, be it Christ hence to live:
    If Jordan above me shall roll,
    No pang shall be mine, for in death as in life
    Thou wilt whisper Thy peace to my soul.

    But, Lord, ’tis for Thee, for Thy coming we wait,
    The sky, not the grave, is our goal;
    Oh, trump of the angel! Oh, voice of the Lord!
    Blessed hope, blessed rest of my soul!

    And Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight,
    The clouds be rolled back as a scroll;
    The trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend,
    Even so, it is well with my soul.

    You will find peace in this transition, and you will be exactly where you are supposed to be. Thanks for listening and helping me see acceptance. Thanks for sharing the words to the Schiller version! Later alligator!
